Panoramic GigaPan images to hit Google Earth

Remember that GigaPan camera system from earlier this year? The one that made taking ridiculously large panoramic shots — like the one of Dublin Castle above — a lesson in simplicity? Yeah, well that very system is now being used to add detailed, wide-angle images to Google Earth thanks to collaboration between the search giant and Carnegie Mellon University. Additionally, we’ve now learned that Charmed Labs in Austin, TX will be manufacturing the mechanical devices and selling them for $300 apiece. But before the public gets their hands on ‘em, the firm is producing 300 systems “for people who will provide them with feedback.” Ah, the perfect excuse for a new widescreen monitor, no?

[Thanks, David]

Sony about to release another YouTube-centric camcorder?

We’ve already seen Sony’s first shameless attempt to court the YouTube crowd with the NSC-GC1 5 megapixel web-corder, but a quick look through the instruction manual reveals specs for another model, the NSC-GC3, which apparently cuts shooting time down from 2 hours to just 29 minutes. We’re not certain if that’s because of higher resolution or less memory, but either way, expect the GC3 to make an appearance soon.

[Thanks, maxmasa31]

Canon PowerShot SD870 gets reviewed

Canon’s PowerShot SD870 (also known as the IXUS 860 IS in some parts of the world) isn’t exactly the sort of camera that offers a lot of surprises, but the folks at PhotographyBLOG decided to check it out nonetheless, and they apparently found quite a bit to like about it. Calling it the “best IXUS model that we’ve reviewed,” they found the camera delivered consistently solid images, although as is often the case, they recommend staying away form the highest ISO settings. They were also especially impressed by the cameras small size and larger than usual 3-inch LCD, as well as its 28mm wide-angle lens. On the downside, that small size and big screen comes at the expense of an optical viewfinder, and they found that the camera dragged a bit in the continuous shooting mode. Those factors seem to have been far from deal-breakers, however, with PhotographyBLOG bestowing an impressive 4.5 out of 5 rating on the camera.
